There are lots of ways to plug into your union. This page gives you a quick overview of how to get started.
The best way to learn what we’re about, though, is by talking to an organizer. Email us or reach out to your department steward!
BECOME A MEMBER!
Georgia's so-called "right-to-work" law limits what unions can require, but not what we can build together. Every new member strengthens our ability to enforce our contract and fight for more.
Membership in the union means you have the right to vote on union matters and run for elected positions. To become union members, PhD workers must sign a union authorization card and pay monthly dues. Membership dues are used to enforce the contract and advance the interests of the members.
Curious where every dollar goes? Learn more about our national union’s approach to financial transparency, accountability, and how dues are allocated.
BECOME A DEPARTMENT STEWARD!
We are always looking for more stewards. Stewards play a critical role in connecting rank-and-file members to the union as an organization. Stewards are the first point of contact for a student-worker facing a potential grievance or worker's rights issue and help mobilize their departments for union activities. Read SEIU's Stewards Manual to learn more about this role.
Student-workers at all levels are welcome and encouraged to become a steward for their department. Don't worry if you're new to Emory or don't have any organizing experience. The union will provide all the training and guidance you need!
If you're interested in becoming a steward, email emoryunite@gmail.com.
See the current list of Department Stewards here.
JOIN OUR ORGANIZING COMMITTEE!
The Local Executive Board hosts Organizing Committee Meetings every other week. This is an extension of the Local Executive Board where officers, stewards, working-group liaisons, and any dedicated rank-and-file member of the union can join to get into the nuts and bolts of structural and strategic decisions.
Details are usually released on the weekly emails and on Slack. If you'd like to join, feel free to stop on by or email us at emoryunite@gmail.com.
JOIN A WORKING GROUP
Have an issue you're passionate about and think the union should do something about it? Create a working group! Working groups are how the union puts on specific campaigns or organizes for specific sectors of our membership or the broader working class.
You just need at least seven dedicated members to formally create a working group within the union. Find out about our active working groups here. To create a new working group, reach out to us at emoryunite@gmail.com.
